Barcelona Zoo is one of the best zoos in Spain and has a great variety of animal species from all over the world.

Located in the Parque de la Ciutadella, the zoo was inaugurated in 1892, on the day of the Mercè, patron saint of Barcelona. The first zoo animals came from the private collection of Lluís Martí i Codolar that was on his farm called “Old Farm”, located in Horta. Lluís animals were donated to the city of Barcelona in the Parque de la Ciudadela.
The zoo claims to have three main working fields: conservation, research and education.
The maintenance serves the non extinction of animal species, research is concerned with the work of study and conduct scientific research in collaboration with universities, parks and other institutions. Finally, education refers to ensuring that each and every one of the people who annually visit the Zoo understand, appreciate, respect and love the animals, which is of great help to safeguard the wildlife and natural. Therefore, from the zoo are organized activities for children and adults conducted by educators in zoology.
Many animals have been cherished in the Barcelona Zoo, which has one of the largest animal collections in Europe. However, one can’t talk about the Barcelona Zoo without mentioning Copito de Nieve(Snowflake) was, from 1966 to 2003, the star of the zoo since it was the only albino gorilla known so far. Another famous habitant was the Orca Ulysses, that was transferred to another public zoo.
