The Anti Sonar

Now if you’re a bit of a Sonar junkie you’ll know what the Sonar Off is; but for those who don’t it’s the alternative parties that run parallel to the Sonar itself. But where the Sonar is more expensive and attracts a trendier, more international crowd, the Anti Sonar or Sonar Off tends towards the anarchic; crazy, messier festivals populated by ravers, the scruffy, the techno lovers, all thrashing to the rhythm of the music in empty lots or converted warehouses. Many DJ’s come for both events, playing their sets one day in the Sonar, the next in the Anti Sonar, so if you maybe lack the funds to pay for the “legal” festival, then rock out in Moog, la Terraza, the Loft or Macarena. So you’re looking for something more… more out there? That’s ok as well, since there are plenty of parties on the beach, in nearby hotels, even on boats like the Xclusive Boat which bobs on the Mediterranean from 7am on Sunday to 4pm the same day; just in time to make it to LLobregat to continue dancing. Stay tuned into our updates for the line-up for both events!

New Acts Confirmed for Sonar: Roxy Music and the New Young Pony Club.

The group created by Bryan Ferry in the early 70’s, Roxy Music will be playing in the Barcelona Sonar festival Saturday the 19th of June during the Night Sonar. The band had a lot of influence on early punk music and was considered a model for several New Wave and experimental electronic groups. This is the perfect opportunity to see them: this is the first (and so far the only) concert they’ve had in Spain in more than three decades! Playing hits like “Love is the Drug”, “More than this” and “Same old Scene”, Roxy Music has turned into the stellar new addition for the Sonar line-up.

The New Young Pony Club have also been confirmed to play during the Day Sonar on Friday June 18th. They are a rock band from London whose influences are more post-punk and New Wave. “The Optimist”, their new album, will be featuring during their performance. It has been described as dark, robust and danceable, so it should be a hit with all of those who are present to hear them. Because of their strange name, we thought we’d explain the origin: Tahita Bulmer, the lead vocalist, really wanted to be part of a club or team at school, but due to her erratic upbringing (from the ages 8 to 13 she didn’t go to school since she was traveling around the world with her mother), this wasn’t possible. The original band name was “Pony Club” but an Irish band had already claimed the name so they added “New” and “Young” to the name.

Other groups that have recently been confirmed for the Sonar are: Aufgang, Post War Years, Cabo San Roque and Caspa feat. MC Rod Azlan.

Ryoji Ikeda Test Pattern and Spectra

The paths of the Grec Festival XX and the Sonar will cross this year on the 17th of June at the Montjuic Amphitheatre. This new unison will take place during two plays of the visual artist and composer Ryoji Ikeda – a Japanese sound artist who uses frequencies which border human hearing. The most spectacular of these is the so called “Spectra” luminous display of massive proportions that uses white light as a sculpting material. It has been described as an “endless installation”, whose interpretation lies in the hands of its audience and which will be visible throughout Barcelona.

The other display called “Test Pattern” is an incredible audiovisual show which synchronizes sounds to images; the system converts data like text or photos or films into barcode patterns and binary sequences of 1’s and 0’s. In fact, Test Pattern contains so many high-pitched digital sounds that it has the capacity to damage the inside of the eardrum. Well worth a visit, the mix of Ikeda’s high-tech music with the surrounding greenery of the Montjuic Park promises to be unforgettable.

Sonar 2010

The biggest biggest Barcelona arts festival of the year, held from the 17th to the 19th of June.

Sonar Festival is a celebration of the best in electronic, minority and alternative music, this year featuring includes the Chemical Brothers and Dizzee Rascal as well as many others.

Not only that, but the Sonar Festival spills over into a further cultural dimension, with the multimedia arts events happening throughout the weekend. There has also been further development of Sonar Pro, providing professionals a space in which to market fresh ideas and innovative products. With such a diverse range of spectators, any brand is bound to do well after showcasing their wares at this prestigious event.

Last year over 80 thousand people joined in the festivities, and helped make Sonar one of the most well known names on the festival circuit. This year promises to be even bigger and better. Thousands of people will flood the lodging and accommodation across the city that weekend, so it would be advisable to book your Barcelona serviced apartments as soon as possible. We recommend the Gaudi II apartment which is located only 10 minutes walking distance from the MACBA where Sonar By Day takes place!
